Johanne Lykke, b. 1989

Johanne Lykke is a Danish visual artist who lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. She received her Fine Art degree from The Jutland Art Academy in 2015 and completed an independent study at Residency Unlimited in Brooklyn, New York in 2014. She has lived and worked as an artist-in-residence internationally across the US, Europe and South-East Asia. Johanne works with large-format watercolor paintings on paper and some of the question she asks are: What is abstraction? What is the relationship between painting and nature? She works exclusively with watercolors, gouache and water. The high ratio of water to paint highlights the dichotomy between the controllable and the uncontrollable in painting. Her work is often monumental in scale, searching for a dialogue with landscape painting and the idea of the sublime in art. Building upon American Abstract painting traditions like Colorfield Painting and Stain-painting, she aims to push the possibilities for abstract watercolor painting today. She is currently showing a series of monumental, abstract landscape watercolors at Godsbanen in Aarhus, Denmark through August 30nd.
